Experiences with remote work

Remote,Experiences

This week’s post is less technical. I want to share my experience of working from home and what that has meant during this period.

First, working during a pandemic is not the same as ordinary remote work. Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean the circumstances are normal or natural.

Even without a pandemic, having the option to work from home involves several adjustments. At least, that’s how it was for me.

First, the workspace. At the office, you usually don’t have to think about lighting, a chair, a desk, a monitor, a mouse, and other equipment: they’re already there. At home, things are different. Your company may need to send you a monitor and the other equipment you need to feel comfortable and do your work well.

Second, noise. Not everyone has a suitable environment at home. You may live with others or lack a dedicated office space, so good headphones are essential.

Third, breaks and working hours. At home, you need to pay closer attention to taking breaks for water, a snack, or coffee. I miss those afternoon breaks and lunches with colleagues, chatting about something other than work. They really help make the day lighter.

Fourth, clear messages. Written communication, especially about programming, needs to be clear and direct. That becomes harder when everything happens through text. If something is unclear, call or send a voice message: it may be much easier to explain. Before, you could simply walk over to someone’s desk and ask.

Fifth, routine. Keep a schedule for starting work, lunch, breaks, and finishing, just as you would at the office. As with taking breaks, the point is to avoid losing track of time and mixing everything together.

I enjoy the convenience of working from home, but I also miss sharing everyday moments with coworkers. It’s a balance we need to find. Some developers enjoy working alone; others don’t. Personally, I think a hybrid model would be ideal.

What do you prefer: working in person or fully remotely?

See you soon!
